

So to me it seems like that's the inspiration chain. According to Wikipedia, the Elric chronicles deliberately played with and reversed some of the tropes from Tolkien Lord of the Rings had come out in the early 1950s. Or maybe there was a general revival in the genre and fantasy swords were the cool thing. Of course, Moorcock himself could have been influenced by the Ebony Blade his books started coming out in the early 1960s, so he could have seen the Ebony Blade in the late 1950s.
